Teaching science is not scary!
Research has shown that when students leave kindergarten with limited exposure to science, the majority of them will struggle with science all the way up to eighth grade. This means that ensuring science success in higher grades means teaching it in the lower ones.
But many early-elementary educators worry about teaching science—will the material go over their heads? I didn’t study much science. Will I be able to explain concepts correctly? How can I get children excited about and interested in, what can be complex and uninteresting concepts?
Here’s the thing, “Science is messy. We do not always know the answer when we start. We play. We explore. We poke around and stir things up. We try something not because we already know what will happen, but because we want to know what will happen.”
You know what else that statement describes? Young children. They don’t know the answers. They play. They explore. They want to know what will happen.
Take advantage of that curiosity. By allowing students to play, experiment, ask questions, and interact and communicate when it comes to the natural world around them, you’re getting them started in their science education.

This first-grade teacher says, “I used to be a little apprehensive about teaching science because I never felt like I had the right tools to catch my students’ attention in a way that they would be able to understand the material. Now that I have used Science4Us, I know just how excited they are to watch the catchy videos, play the interactive games, and explore all of the activities on the site. It makes it fun to teach science skills. Overall, my students seem more excited to do science activities. They ask me all the time if they can watch the video segments over again.”
